What is the Ranger Derby?
The Ranger Derby was created in California in the early 1950's. The original
track was a sheet of plywood (4'x8') cut in four nearly one foot wide strips and
stacked end to end to make a track about one foot wide and 32 feet long. Three
lath strips were placed to create lanes. A stand and start gate were added and a
line painted at the finish. That was back then. Now there are several variations
of tracks with no national standard. The boys are given a small block of wood,
wooden axles and four wheels. They are given the chance to create the car the
way they want the car with moderate supervision over the use of tools and local
racing rules. The design of the car is left to the boy. Leaders or fathers will or
can make the initial cut if the boy so desires otherwise the boy is given basic
wood working tools to carve the car. ’Course the more work the boy puts into
the car the better and faster it will go down the track. There is also occasionally
an award for the most creative car.
What are the Opportunities to work on the Car?
It is typically encouraged that the boys work on the cars with their father or other
male influence in their lives. This is a priceless opportunity for male bonding and
spiritual guidance. The leaders of out outpost will be available to assist and will
also be setting up Saturday events to permit the boys an opportunity to work on
the cars with the proper tools. We will be announcing these dates to the parents
that decide to allow their boys to participate.
What are the costs of the Pine Wood Derby?
Ranger Derbies are very inexpensive. The basic car kit costs $5.00 there are
plenty other regulation style items your child can get to add to their car however
these items are not required. As a boy growing up in Royal Rangers I rarely
could afford the added items event though they where in the single dollar
amounts and I always had a blast working with the basic kit. If you are
interested in these other Items please see us for more information. Regarding
the actually costs of the event itself, the registration for the derby, has not been
announced yet, the costs are normally very minimal and no where compare to
any of the large events that some of the children attend. We will provide this
information as soon as it becomes available. Also please note that the event is
at least a month away and will be held on a Saturday, so the initial $5.00 is
needed sooner then later.. There is a lot of work for your boy to put into the
block of wood to make it a car,.
